Odisha minister supports ‘pass-fail’ system in schools

Cuttack: Odisha School and Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra today extended his support to Centre’s proposal to reintroduce the pass-fail system up to Class VIII.

He stated that the move will help evaluate performance of students and teachers in a better manner and improve quality of education.

“Promoting students to higher classes without examination is not a healthy sign and will not be helpful in improving learning,” said Patra on the sidelines of the foundation day celebrations of the Board of Secondary Education (BSE).

As per reports, the Centre is considering to reintroduce passing criteria for Class V and VIII from March 2019.

The National Achievement Survey of the Centre has shown a deterioration of learning abilities of students because of the ‘no-detention policy.’ The survey conducted by the Centre on February 5 this year found out that Class X students performed worse than the Class III, V and VIII students, said sources.
