West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has come under intense criticism for her controversial remarks on the recent gangrape of an Odia second-year medical student near a private medical college in Durgapur.
The incident, which has already sent shockwaves across the region, took a political turn after the Chief Minister questioned why the victim had stepped out at night with a male friend.
The statement, widely perceived as insensitive and victim-blaming, has triggered a massive backlash from Odisha netizens, women’s rights activists, and social media users.
Many have accused Banerjee of undermining the gravity of the crime and diverting attention from the failure of law enforcement in ensuring women’s safety.

Angry netizens are now demanding an apology from the Chief Minister, stating that such comments are unbecoming of a leader and may discourage victims from coming forward. Activists have stressed that no woman should ever be questioned for being outside at any time, as safety is a fundamental right.
Meanwhile, the victim is recovering from her injuries in a hospital. Her father has expressed disappointment, stating that no one from the West Bengal government has reached out to the family, though he received a call from the Odisha Women’s Commission.
The incident and the Chief Minister’s remarks have reignited debate on women’s safety, accountability, and political sensitivity in handling such tragic crimes. On the other hand, at least five accused have been arrested till now in this case while a further probe is on.
