Odisha jail inmates spent whopping Rs 18 lakh on snacks!

Bhubaneswar: Can you believe that inmates lodged in several jails across Odisha spent over Rs 18 lakh in just one year on snacks? Such startling revelations came up from the revenue recorded at canteens inside six prisons in the State.

According to sources, the inmates of Jharpara jail have spent the most Rs 7.22 lakh to buy snacks and other items from its canteen. The canteen of Choudwar jail generated revenue of Rs 6.30 lakh while Berhampur jail canteen recorded business of over Rs 3 lakh.

The canteens at Baripada, Keonjhar and Balasore registered revenues worth Rs 60,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 54,000, respectively.

The jail administration had earlier come up with the idea of establishing canteens for inmates to have snacks and beverages of their choice so as to put a check on illegal entry of outside food and other items.

“The idea is to enforce discipline and at the same time putting a check on entry of contraband items,” said Jharpara jailor, DN Barik.

However, the question here is how the inmates were able to spend so much on snacks when they are entitled to a daily wage of Rs 40 for doing several works inside the jails?

Similarly, a family is allowed to deposit Rs 500 per month for the inmate lodged in a particular jail. Under such circumstances, the source of money acquired by jail inmates has now come under scanner.
