Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has informed the State Election Commission about its readiness to hold election in 91 urban local bodies, including the Berhampur Municipal Corporation.

In a letter additional chief secretary in-charge of Housing and Urban Development Department, Injeti Srinivas asked the Director of Municipal Administration Hrushikesh Tripathy to inform the SEC about the state government's preparedness for the polls.

"The state government is prepared to co-operate with the SEC and help in conducting the elections to urban local bodies," Tripathy said in the letter.

The department issued the notification last night for the election to the bodies, the terms of which end on September 30.

Tripathy said the SEC would announce the dates for the polls any time.

Elections to the Bhubaneswar and Cuttack Municipal Corporation would be held later.

The hurdles before the urban polls were cleared after the Orissa High Court lifted its interim stay on urban local body elections on August 6 and directed the state government and the SEC to go ahead with elections.

Meanwhile, the SEC has amended the Odisha Municipal Act, 1950 and reserved 50 per cent seats for women.
