Bhubaneswar: In a bid to overcome the shortage of medical professionals in the state, the Odisha government on Tuesday enhanced the retirement age of doctors working at three medical colleges.
 
According to officials, medicos at SCB medical college in Cuttack, VSS medical college in Sambalpur and MKCG medical college in Berhampur will now retire at the age of 65 instead of 60.
 
Sources said, the state government has 4,362 posts of doctors including 324 in the three medical colleges. 
 
In the last winter session of the Odisha Assembly, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Damodar Rout had said out of the sanctioned posts of 4,362 doctors, 3,936 posts have been filled up and 426 are vacant.
 
Official sources said that the Union health ministry had suggested that the retirement age of doctors be raised to 65 years.
