Bhubaneswar: Announcing a huge reform, the School and Mass Education department today informed that it has decided to significantly increase the class duration of three important subjects of school students in Odisha from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Informing about the development, S&ME minister Samir Das said, "Reviews of the exam result trends have shown that most students who had failed or scored less had recorded poor results in English, Mathematics and Science, so in order to give the subjects more focus we have decided to allot more duration to them."

"With the new rule coming into effect, students will now have to study the aforesaid mentioned subjects for one-and-half-hours at a stretch instead of 45 minutes earlier. However, the class duration of other subjects will be of 45 minutes as usual," said Das.

The department has sent a directive to heads of all schools to prepare routine so that students up to Class 9 do not face any trouble in their studies.

The S&ME minister said the new move will help students get more time to clear their doubts in the fundamentals of these crucial subjects.

On improving the level of English education, Das said that his department has prepared a blueprint to focus more on imparting good quality English education to students right from primary level.

"The project will be implemented from this year on a pilot basis at a selected school in each district. Later the project will be implemented at block and lower levels from the next academic year," said Das.
