Odisha government withdraws charges against Abhijit Iyer

Bhubaneswar: Acknowledging journalist Abhijit Iyer’s appeal to withhold prosecution against him over his derogatory remark on Konark Temple, the Odisha government today decided to drop all charges.

According to a statement issued by the special secretary of the Odisha Home Department, “The government has decided not to accord sanction of prosecution in cases where prosecution has been sought.”

“The government also decided to take steps to withdraw other cases pending against him by following laid-down procedures,” the press release said.

Citing that Iyer had earlier appealed to ‘accept his apology and contrition’ in having wounded the sentiments of people of Odisha without intention, the government has decided to drop the charges.

“Considering his apology in having hurt the sentiments of people ‘without malice or mal-intent’, the Odisha Legislative Assembly has pardoned him on November 16,” the government statement read.
