Bhubaneswar: The Director General of Police(DGP) of Odisha, Abhay Kumar, today ordered a high level probe into the self-immolation and death of the BJD women wing leader Meenakshi Mishra.

As per reports, the enquiry will be conducted by IG (Modernisation) Rekha Lohani. The investigation will be conducted to ascertain under what circumstances Meenakshi attempted self-immolation which led to her death.

“DGP orders high level enquiry into death of BJD Women leader Smt. Meenakshi Mishra following attempt of self immolation in the premises of SP Office Berhampur on 12/02/20. Smt. Rekha Lohani, IGP Modernization, will conduct the enquiry,” tweeted the State Crime Branch.

Protesting police action against her son Krutibasa Mishra alias Raja, Meenakshi Mishra, the State executive member of Biju Mahila Janata Dal (BMJD) from Ganjam district had set herself on fire outside Berhampur SP’s office on February 12. She later succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar last Friday.

Earlier on January 28, Meenakshi and her son Raja were assaulted by a group of armed persons in Panda colony under Baidyanathpur Police limits of Berhampur.

A complaint was lodged by the mother-son duo following which three attackers were arrested. Later, Raja was also also arrested on the basis of a counter FIR.

However, the Biju Mahila Janata Dal leader alleged that her son was falsely implicated in the case and had no role in the attack. She had also written to Berhampur SP Pinak Mishra demanding the release of her son. When no action was taken in this regard, she took the extreme step to show her protest.

Currently, Raja is on bail till February 25. He was granted interim bail by the District & Sessions Judge in Berhampur on February 14.
