Bhubaneswar: The State Government has decided to disengage about 50,000 government employees who have been recruited by different departments during the last four years.

A notification into this regard was issued by the General Administration department on Sunday.

“All retired persons, who have been engaged by different Departments/Heads of Departments should be disengaged by appropriate authorities,” read the notification.

The Government has also asked the concerned departments to take necessary steps and carry out the order with immediate effect.

Earlier, the Odisha government had recruited retired employees considering their experience and requirement in various departments. However, former Chief Secretary Sahadeva Sahu says that the  decision was taken only to rehabilitate those people who were close to the government.

"Most of the people at the Secretariat level who were closely associated with the government were recruited. It was expected that those people with experience will be of great help but that didn't really happened," Sahu said.

The decision to disengage the retired government employees was taken at a meeting attended by all Secretaries and special Secretaries of the different departments on August 10 here.

"We have sought reports from different departments on how many employees are currently employed. After it comes only then we will take further steps," Energy minister Sushant Singh said.
