Jajpur: Two weeks after the alleged police excess on three college going couples, Odisha Police have transferred the controversial inspector-in-charge of Jajpur town police station.

Alok Ranjan Ray has been shifted to Mayurbhanj district, a senior police officer said.

Ray was accused of beating up three couples after nabbing them from a park near Trilochaneswar temple in the city on January 15.

Later, he forced them to kneel down in front of the police station. Hundreds of onlookers witnessed the assault.

The incident had created a hue and cry across the state and human right activists had criticised the police.

Even a petition was filed in the Orissa High Court seeking its intervention on January 21.

When contacted, Jajpur Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar said, "Yes, he (Ray) has been transferred to Mayurbhanj district".
