Bhubaneswar: With the arrival of monsoon delaying in Odisha, the State continues to grapple under extreme heat wave conditions. As many as nine places of the State on Sunday recorded temperature over 40 degree Celsius.
As per the bulletin of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Department on Sunday, Sambalpur remained the hottest at 43.6 degree C while the mercury settled at 43.1 degree C at Hirakud. Similarly, Titlagarh (42.6), Angul (40.4), Sonepur (40.8), Malkangiri (41), Bhawanipatna (40.5), Bolangir (42) and Jharsuguda (42.2) witnessed intense wave conditions.
Though the Southwest monsoon hit Kerala on Saturday, it is likely to get delayed to reach Odisha as the conditions are not favourable for supporting its advancement to the State, an IMD official said.
"The monsoon is unlikely to hit Odisha in the next four -five days and no specific date has been announced about its arrival, said H R Biswas, Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre.
"The monsoon usually makes an onset in Odisha by June 10. At present, there is no sign of the onset of monsoon in Odisha and a clear picture is likely to emerge in a day or two," he said.
Meanwhile, several parts of Odisha have been experiencing rains and thunderstorms due to Nor'wester in the last few days.
Pointing out that there was no direct link between the monsoons arrival in Kerala and Odisha, Biswas said, "It all depends on the activity of the monsoon current and wind speed that help in its movement."
