Odisha constables, havildars granted power to make arrests, undertake investigation

Bhubaneswar: In a major step to tackle rising number of cases, constables and havildars of Odisha Police fulfilling certain eligibility criteria have been given power to investigate and make arrests in specific offences. A proposal in this regard was sent by Odisha Police to the State Government which received approval today, Police DG, RP Sharma said while speaking to media persons.

“The government has empowered the graduate constables and crime intelligence havildars in all police stations to undertake investigation and make arrests under specific sections of IPC and minor offences,” RP Sharma said.

Sharma further said “The constables and havildars will be able to undertake investigation of crimes having provision of jail term of less than 3 years under the IPC.”

The constables and havildars will have power in cases filed under Odisha Prevention of Gambling Act, Odisha Fire Works and Loud speakers Regulation Act and similar minor offences, the Police DG informed. However, the constables and havildars will be provided training before they start exercising their power, Sharma added.
