Puri: Congress workers on Monday allegedly attacked by some miscreants in front of the party office in Puri. The incident reportedly took place when the party meeting was about to begin in presence of senior leaders including AICC general secretary and Odisha in-charge, Jitendra Singh.

As per reports, some members of the Congress student wing were injured after being attacked with iron rods in front of the party office before the beginning of a meeting.

While the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, police have reportedly detained a person in connection with the incident.

"When we entered the Congress Bhawan, we saw some outsiders brutally beating a person. When we tried to save him, they attacked us," said an injured Congress worker.

It is alleged that the incident was the result of a factional feud. Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) chief Niranjan Patnaik, who was present at the party office, said that the matter would be investigated by the disciplinary committee of the party.

Patnaik assured action if it is found to be an intra-party clash and said. “Whatever happened is unfortunate. If any Congress worker is involved, stern action will be taken after a probe.”

"We don't actually know whether they were Congress workers or not. No one even knows their name and the organisation or party they belong to. They can be from the Congress, the BJD or the BJP... we don't know who they were," said party's State in-charge, Jitendra Singh.

Following the incident, senior party leaders reportedly cut short their visit to the pilgrim town and returned to Bhubaneswar much before their scheduled time.
