Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday expressed deep concern over the reported developments during President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Siliguri.

He stated that the incident caused disappointment among the people of Odisha and the tribal community across the country.

In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said the situation has hurt the sentiments of many, particularly members of the tribal community. Majhi, who hails from the Santal community, also stated that the matter should be viewed beyond political considerations.

Concern Over International Santali Conference Issue

The Chief Minister said the reported denial of permission for the International Santali Conference and the last-minute change of venue could not be dismissed merely as a logistical issue.

CM Mohan Majhi further expressed, the event was intended to celebrate the rich heritage and cultural legacy of the Santali community. He said creating obstacles in such an occasion reflected insensitivity towards tribal brothers and sisters.

Majhi also noted that President Droupadi Murmu, who hails from Rairangpur in Odisha, symbolises the aspirations and pride of millions of people across the country.

Statement On Constitutional Dignity

The Chief Minister further emphasised that the office of the President is the highest constitutional position in the country and stands above political differences while representing the dignity of the Constitution.

He said that any action that undermines the sanctity of the office diminishes respect for the country’s constitutional framework. CM Majhi added that in a healthy democracy, narrow political thinking should have no place and that programmes celebrating constitutional institutions and tribal heritage should be encouraged rather than obstructed.

Chief Minister’s Post On Social Media

In his tweet, CM Mohan Majhi wrote, "The recent developments in Siliguri during the visit of our Hon’ble President, Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji, have deeply saddened the people of Odisha and the entire tribal community across India...This matter goes far beyond political considerations...As a member of the Santhal community, this hurtful action of the TMC Government of West Bengal, has also created a deeper sense of anguish and hurt within me and the entire Odia populace..."
