Jajpur: Jajpur boy Abhijit Rout has secured berth in the 18-member Indian squad for the upcoming Little Baseball Championship to be held in Taiwan.

Abhijit, a standard VIII student of Jujhapada school in Dangadi block of Jajpur district, is on cloud nine over his selection.

“My hard work paid off as I had developed interest in baseball much early. I am happy to be a part of the Indian team for the upcoming international championship,” said Abhijit.

Coming from a humble background, Abhijit’s parents have credited coach Rupashri Lenka for their son’s achievement.

“Since early, my son had shown interest in sports. But as our financial condition is not good, we could not encourage him. However, it is due to his coach’s efforts, my son will now play for India,” said Abhijit’s mother, Manasi Rout.

Jajpur’s local boy Abhijit will undergo training and participate in the national camp at Chandigarh till August 10. Today, he was accorded a grand reception at the railway station upon his arrival and locals prayed for Abhijit’s success.

Rupashri Lenka on the other hand stated that Abhijit is a wonderful player and was selected due to his talent and performance in the district championship held at Puri and national level competition in New Delhi.
