Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that the Berhampur-Jeypore road will be upgraded into a six-lane highway at an estimated cost of Rs 6,000 crore.
The proposed corridor is expected to significantly improve connectivity between coastal Odisha and the tribal-dominated southern districts, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people.
According to reports by ET Infra, the Chief Minister also announced that 10 important roads within the city and adjoining areas will be constructed or upgraded for Rs 52.17 crore. These projects are intended to ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility as the city continues to expand.
Greater Berhampur Plan And Urban Expansion
CM Majhi also directed the district administration to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the development of Greater Berhampur by bringing the surrounding panchayats under a planned urban framework.
In addition, the Chief Minister announced the establishment of designated food streets in different areas under the Berhampur Municipal Corporation to support organised urban development and local livelihoods.
He added that Town Planning Schemes will be implemented to ensure systematic provision of basic civic services, with two such schemes already under preparation.

Infrastructure Push Alongside Road Safety Measures
The highway announcement comes amid the state government’s parallel focus on road safety and data-driven governance. Earlier this week, the Odisha government reviewed a newly developed integrated road safety dashboard designed to enable real-time monitoring and coordinated decision-making across departments.
The centralised platform, developed by RBG Labs of IIT Madras, is intended to provide live data and analytics on road safety indicators, helping authorities track accident trends, compliance levels and the impact of interventions. Officials said the system will support evidence-based planning as large road projects, including highways and urban roads, are taken up across the state.
The dashboard initiative builds on earlier data-led road safety efforts, including the Integrated Road Accident Database, and is part of the state’s wider push to reduce fatalities through coordinated enforcement, engineering improvements and monitoring.
