Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: Senior Odia IAS officer Pramod Kumar Mishra was on Wednesday appointed as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PK Mishra, a 1972 batch IAS of Gujarat cadre will replace senior bureaucrat Nripendra Misra who informed the government to step down from his duties on August 30.

Mishra, a native of Sambalpur is one of the few top bureaucrats to be retained by Modi government after returning to power for the second time. He was earlier serving as the Additional Secretary to the PM in the rank and status of Cabinet Minister.

As Additional Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister during 2014-19 Dr Mishra is credited with  introducing innovation and transformative changes in human resource management, particularly appointments to senior positions.

With a postgraduate and PHD in economics, Mishra has served in various key positions for both Indian and Gujarat governments and is considered to be one of the most powerful bureaucrats in the country.

Mishra, an alumnus of Delhi School of Economics, has specialised in development economics from the University of Sussex. He has vast experience in the management of programmes in various sectors-- power sector, agriculture, infrastructure financing, regulatory issues and disaster management.

Recently, he was conferred with the United Nations SASAKAWA Award 2019, the most prestigious international award in disaster management.
