Cuttack: Famous Odisha footballer and referee Susant Kumar Das died of kidney ailments here on Tuesday.

The 55-year-old had represented Odisha in the Santosh Trophy National Football Championships in 1985 and 1990 and after retirement he functioned as the state-level referee.

A member of the Football Referee Committee of Odisha, Das was suffering from kidney ailments and was recovering after one of his kidneys was transplanted.

He fell seriously ill on Tuesday and passed away while being taken to the SCB Medical College Hospital here.

As soon as the news spread, hundreds thronged the footballer`s house at Deolosahi in the city to pay their last respect.

The body was taken in a funeral procession by hundreds of sport lovers to the Satichoura crematorium on the banks of river Kathajori.

The Odisha Football Association (OFA) and Football Association of Odisha in separate messages condoled the death of Das.
