Concerns of the Odia film industry came to the fore at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where actor Manoj Mishra apprised Bollywood star Aamir Khan of the shortage of cinema halls in Odisha and the challenges faced in releasing Odia films in the State.
During the interaction, Mishra explained how he had to release his film Mindgame in villages across Odisha due to the absence of functional theatres.
He said, “We have many talented actors, directors and technicians.” He further stated that just as Aamir Khan showed interest in the Oscars to create opportunities for Indians internationally, Odias also wish for their films to reach the global market, but ‘there is not much faith in us.’
Mishra added, “When I screen a movie at a place where there are no ACs or fans, but the audience is still watching it while drenched in sweat, it means that I made a good film. If people like Aamir Khan support independent filmmakers like us, then Indian films will not only be screened in festivals but will establish business.”
Aamir Khan Responds
After listening to the issues raised by Mishra, Aamir Khan said the matter is receiving attention at the national level. He said, “The Government of India is looking into that seriously. If theatres are made in every State, then it would be a great boost for the cinemas.”
The exchange drew attention to longstanding concerns within the Odia film sector, particularly the lack of exhibition spaces and limited opportunities for wider release, as sources said.
