Bhubaneswar: Veteran theatre artiste and director Nityananda Das passed away late on Wednesday night. He was 83.

Several stage actors, intellectuals, artistes and noted personalities paid floral tributes to the mortal remains of the veteran actor at Annapurna Theatre in Cuttack. Thereafter his body was taken to his residence at Balisahi and later consigned to flames at Puri Swargadwar.

Das is renowned for his instrumental roles in more than 150 stage plays during a career that spanned over four decades from 1957 to 1990.

His comic roles in stage plays not only mesmerised audience with fun but he was the one of the most influential factors that led to the rise in the popularity of the theatres.

Not only acting, Das also showcased his magic by directing more than 50 acclaimed stage plays. He had also appeared as a comic actor in a dozen Ollywood movies.

The veteran actor received several accolades for his contribution to the theatre industry including Sangeet Natak Akademy award in 2006.
