Sambalpur/Bhubaneswar: Normal life was paralysed in Sambalpur today as shops and business establishments including technical institutes remained closed following a 12-hr shutdown call given by the local bar association due to the scuffle between the district collector and lawyers on Monday last. Hundreds of commuters too faced problems as vehicles went off the road.

Earlier on Wednesday Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had ordered a Crime Branch probe into the alleged row between the Sambalpur collector Mrinalini Darswal and the lawyers. Condemning the act, government employees from across the district on Tuesday took out a rally from the official residence of the collector demanding strict action against the people allegedly involved in the scuffle. The employees also presented a memorandum to the Inspector General of Police (Northern Range), R P Coche and the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (Northern Division).

The local bar association too has demanded action against the collector. The district administration and the police made elaborate security arrangements to maintain law and order during the bandh observation.
