Koraput: The absence of a dialysis facility at Koraput district head-quarters hospital here in Odisha seemed to have taken a heavy toll on patients in the tribal-dominated region.
With a steep rise in renal failure cases, the number of patients requiring dialysis has increased in recent times, official sources said.
These patients are either referred to hospitals at Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, about 200 km from here, or the state capital, about 500 km away.
"It's unfortunate that Koraput hospital, the referral unit for Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput districts, does not have a dialysis unit. Apart from renal failure, poison-related and brain malaria cases can be treated at the centre," said Jeypore based activist Ajit Sahu.
Considering the remoteness of the area where over 60 percent of the population belongs to the BPL category, the government should establish a dialysis unit at the district headquarters hospital, he said
"We are preparing the project report for a dialysis unit and will soon submit it to the government," Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO-Koraput) Niranjan Das said.
He said initially the hospital plans to set up a two-bed dialysis centre, which requires at least three staff nurses and a specialist doctor.
"A doctor posted at the hospital will be sent for a training to run the unit," Das added.
