Puri: The little sleepy village of Birgovindpur, about 15 kilometres from the temple city, was today turned into a virtusal police camp following the Odisha High Cort directive to the district administration to stop animal sacrifice at the Kali temple. Around 10 platoons of police forces were pressed into service to prevent any untoward incident.

The district administration was constantly requesting the large number of devotees to maintain law and order and not to insist on animal sacrifice failing which it warned that arrests have to be made. The administration, however, clarified that only two to three could be sacrificed as per the age-old tradition. But mass sacrifice would not be allowed.

The high court on the demands of animal rights activists had banned animal sacrifice at the Kali temple and asked the Puri district administration to take appropriate measures to carry out the order while denying direct intervention in the matter.

The district authorities along with the police literally were on its toes to stop the heinous practice going on for decades. Thousands of devotees offered animals including birds to the famous Dakshina Kali during Kali Puja at Birgovindpur.
