Sambalpur: A sub-centre of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) will be opened in Sambalpur where students can get training on Sambalpuri cloth designing and bamboo craft along with research work. Presently, the centre of NIFT at Bhubaneswar has been running since 2010 in the State.

Speaking about the development, district collector of Sambalpur, Subham Saxena said the process for establishment of sub-centre in Dhankauda area of the city has been finalised. Initially, the sub-centre will offer a 3-month and a 6-month course in designing Sambalpuri clothes and later other courses will be introduced for students.

Sources said all administrative preparations have been completed at the government level for establishment of the sub-centre of the premier fashion designing institute.

"The sub-centre will start functioning at a government building in Dhankauda with a few short term courses. Later, other courses will be included in the curriculum," said Saxena.

Welcoming the decision, residents and students of Sambalpur expressed happiness and said that it will not only be helpful for students to pursue a different career, but will also help promote the local culture.

"I am very happy that Sambalpur will have a NIFT sub centre. Local students will now get a chance to pursue fashion designing here which was not possible before as they had to go to other places," said a student Ekta Purohit.

Another student of GM University, Subhashree Barik said, "With this new sub-centre, Sambalpuri culture will be promoted at international level."
