Naveen urges Centre to declare city airport int

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday urged the Civil Aviation Ministry to declare the Biju Patnaik Airport here as an international airport in view of the requisite infrastructure facilities available in the state capital.

In a letter to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh, Patnaik said, “You may use your good office to ask airline operators to operate international flights out of/through the Biju Patnaik Airport, Bhubaneswar.”

Patnaik, reminding Singh of the March 9 meeting they had held said, “You had also offered to explore the possibility of connecting Bhubaneswar to Middle-East, South Asian and Sooth East Asian countries.”

In the letter, the Odisha Chief Minister stated work of the new domestic terminal building complex at Biju Patnaik Airport was nearing completion and likely to be ready in a month or two.

While the new terminal building can exclusively handle domestic flights the existing terminal building with suitable modification for handling immigration and custom check, can handle international flights, Patnaik said.
