Bhubaneswar: A day after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik demanded Special Category State (SCS) status for Odisha at the NDC meet in New Delhi, the BJD supremo is likely to raise the controversial Polavaram project issue at the National Water Resources Council (NWRC) meeting today.

The meet to be chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is set to adopt the National Water Policy- 2012 draft, official sources said.

Naveen, according to highly placed sources will raise the issues of Polavaram and Lower Suktel Irrigation Project before the council. The Chief Minister will also put forth Odisha’s demand to increase the duration of the construction period of the state-based irrigation projects including Lower Suktel.

This apart, the CM will keep his statement over the injustice meted out to Odisha regarding Polavaram.

The state is expected to demand formation of a special task force to strengthen the drainage system in the state and to conserve flood water for future use. Similarly, the CM will also stress on special fund allocation to renovate age-old big water bodies in the state.

Notably, some of the provisions of National Water Policy including proposal to evolve a broad over-arching national legal framework of general principles on water have been objected by several states including Kerala and Haryana after the council’s earlier meeting held about a decade ago.
