Bhubaneswar: In a bid to appease the voters from farming community, CM Naveen Patnaik launched the free mobile phone scheme for farmers under the Digital Mandi scheme. The farmers can access the market information related to agriculture through the mobiles.
 
Inaugurating the Digital Bazaar programme at Exhibition ground here on Tuesday, the CM distributed free cell phones to 5,000 farmers having Kisan Credit Cards. More 15,000 beneficiaries will get the phones at district levels within a month, sources said. The eligible farmers will be shortlisted by the district level committee under chairmanship of Collector.
 
The State Government has also consulted with service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to send free voice SMSs related to market prices of agriculture produces and fertilizers and weather condition, among many other information. Notably, the government allocated Rs 2 cr for the scheme in the last budget.
