National athletics meet to begin at Kalinga Stadium from tomorrow

Bhubaneswar: Around 600 athletes from across the country will gather at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar to participate in the National Open Athletics Championships-2018 beginning tomorrow.

The four-day event is being organised by Odisha Government’s Sports & Youth Services Department.

A 15 member delegation including international athletes Amiya Mallick and Parbati Sethi will represent Odisha in the event.

The championship will feature medal winners for India at the recently held Asian Games 2018.

“It feels good to be here. The facilities at the stadium have become better since the last national camp here in 2016. It feels absolutely new now. The athletes who perform in this championship will get a chance to play at the international level. If my performance is good enough, I may get a chance at the international level”, said an athlete participating in the event.

“I am participating in the 100 meters hurdles event. This is my first time at this open championships. I would like to perform well and win gold,” said another athlete.

Notable athletes who will not be participating in the meet include world champion in javelin throw Neeraj Chopra and sprinters Hima Das and Dutee Chand.
