Bhubaneswar: National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) on Monday became the first PSU to start a pilot-cum-demonstration project on carbon sequestration in its captive power plant at Angul.

Sidhanta Das, Member Secretary, State Pollution Control Board, laid the foundation stone of the proposed carbon sequestration pilot project at the NALCO power plant.

Carbon sequestration is a method of managing and storing carbon dioxide or other forms of carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere by

burning carbon-based fuels.Under the project, a system would be introduced into the flue gas stream to clean the gas to suit cultivation of algae, NALCO sources said.Micro-algae could achieve a growth rate 10 times more than that of other land plants, they said.

The algae so produced can be used for production of bio-fuel, poultry & cattle feed, aquaculture feed, pharmaceutical products and a kind of organic fuel having high calorific value, they said. An area of 0.18 acre has been earmarked and Indo-Can Technology Solutions, a pioneer in the area of bio-technology solutions, has been engaged for providing

technical consultancy and services to guide NALCO for completion of the project within 18 months.
