Nabarangpur braces for parched summer

Nabarangpur: With mercury rising in the state, water bodies have gone dry forcing people to suffer hard to fetch drinking water.

People trek miles to collect water from the reservoirs as there are no waters available nearby. Though there are tube wells in some villages, they are lying defunct forcing people to travel far off places to fetch water. Even they have to dig small wells for water which also causes contaminated diseases.

“We are taking waters from the ponds as there is no other option. There is only one tube well since last 20 years which is not working properly. We have approached the officials several times but in vain”, said a resident of Nabarangpur.

However, the district administration says that all the tube wells in villages are being repaired and the process of setting new tube wells is on.

“There are 11,000 odd tube wells in the district and we are taking up steps to complete the maintenance work of all tube wells by March 21 any how”, said Collector of Nabarangpur Sibabrat Das.

“We have completed preventive maintenance of 90 per cent tube wells and will finish the remaining work soon. We are even setting 1, 500 new tube wells in the district this year”, he added.

Not only Nabarangpur district, but there are other districts as well where people suffer most in the summer to collect drinking water.
