Bhubaneswar: In a bid to allay apprehensions over Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines, a mock poll drill will be conducted across Odisha from January 7, informed chief electoral officer of the State, Surendra Kumar. Addressing a press conference regarding preparedness for the upcoming polls, Kumar stated that final version of the revised voters’ list will be published on January 21.

Even though the dates for the polls are yet to be announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the State Election Commission is making all necessary preparations right from procurement of EVMs, VVPATs, revision of voters list to training of officers.

As many as 12, 08,396 applications have been received for inclusion, deletion and necessary modification in the voters list.

“Seven mobile vans will be pressed into service in each Assembly segment to create awareness about EVMs and VVPAT machines. Each van will be equipped with one ballot unit, control unit and VVPAT machines. As per plans, each van will cover four villages in one day and conduct mock polling to create awareness and boost confidence of people,” said Kumar.

Kumar further informed that there are 37,606 polling booths and this time the number of booths might go up after the publication of the final voter list.

“At present, we have received 89,337 ballot units, 91,869 control units and 89,351 VVPAT machines. The first level check of 95 per cent machines has already been completed,” Kumar added.
