Bhubaneswar: Panic struck passers by here on Thursday bringing the traffic to standstill for a while.

A mock drill conducted by state Fire Service Training Institute here to check the preparedness of all allied departments in handling any eventuality put people in a chaotic situation after an aircraft almost forced into the training building. People were caught unaware about the mock drill which was part of an exercise of fire safety week.

“Our motto is to save people. We would like to come closer to people by serving them in times of necessity,” DG (Fire Services) Binay Kumar Behera said.

Amid chaos all around, fire tenders were called in to put out the fire. Ambulances were rushed to the operational area to rescue the mock casualties.

“We train our men how to bail out people in times of crisis, accidents, chemical disasters in factories etc,” Prinicipal Fire Service Training Institute Anant Charan Sethi said.

This unusual mock exercise imitating the 9/11 World Trade Centre attack was rehearsed so as to deal with such type of eventualities as high-rise buildings are incrementing in the state capital.

Today was the first day of the fire safety week concluding on April 20.
