Berhampur: A BJD leader was killed by miscreants near his house at Haripur under Dharkote block this afternoon, police said. The deceased was identified as Congress Nayak (42), who happened to be the representative of the Lok Sabha member from Aska Nityanand Pradhan.
Nayak was attacked with sharp weapons when he was coming out of the house, the sources said. Senior police officers, including SP (Ganjam) Rajesh Patil rushed to the spot. Though the exact cause of the incident was not known immediately, police suspected previous enmity to be the cause of the incident.
The incident took place, just a day after the chief minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik campaigned in the area for his party candidates, contesting for the zilla parishad members. Patnaik addressed a meeting at Adapada, near the village, where the incident took place.
