Minor boy killed, houses destroyed in elephant attacks

Bonai/Bhawanipatna: A minor boy was killed while several houses and crops were destroyed by wild elephants in two separate incidents in Sundergarh and Kalahandi districts on Wednesday.

According to sources, a 10-year-old boy was trampled to death by an elephant at Amarud village under Banki forest range under K.Balang police limits in Sundergarh district late last night. The mishap occurred when the boy, Debendra Munda, was sleeping with his family in his house.

As per reports, a herd of seven elephants ventured into the village last night and damaged their house. Finding the pachyderms so close to the house, Munda’s family members ran away, but Munda failed to escape from the spot.

Munda was trampled by the elephants and he died on the spot, sources said.

Villagers alleged that the herd had been damaging crops since last four days, but last night the wild animals ventured into the human habitation and attacked the boy.

On receiving information, the Forest Ranger visited the spot and assured compensation to the family of the deceased as per the government provisions.

Similarly, panic gripped villagers in Mukhiguda area of Kalahandi district after a herd of elephants destroyed several houses in the village and ate crops.

The locals here have alleged that it is difficult for them to chase the elephant herd as it enters human habitation in the evening hours.
