Serious allegations of police excess have surfaced from the Hatabazar area under Jagatsinghpur Sadar police station in the district, where a minor boy has allegedly been subjected to third-degree torture by the cops.
The mother of the victim alleged that her son, a class eighth student, was picked up from his school and brought to the police station in connection with a theft case and the alleged possession of an illegal firearm registered against his father. The family has claimed that the boy was subjected to physical assault inside the police station.
The minor’s mother alleged that her son was beaten with belts and shoes, resulting in injuries. She further claimed that she too, was allegedly assaulted when she protested against the police action. The incident has triggered outrage, with the family accusing the police of gross violation of child rights.
The woman stated that she has submitted written complaints to the State Human Rights Commission as well as the Director General of Police, seeking an impartial probe into the alleged custodial torture.
“The police picked up my son and me and allegedly beat us at the station over a theft committed by my husband. They also damaged property at our home and kicked us while wearing shoes. The authorities should arrest the actual culprit, or a family member may take matters into their own hands,” said the minor’s mother.
However, Jagatsinghpur police officials have categorically denied the allegations. In an official press note, the police said that the accusations were ‘baseless’ and claimed that no evidence had emerged to substantiate the charge of third-degree torture. The police also stated that an impartial inquiry is underway into the matter.

While Jagatsinghpur SDPO did not give an on-camera statement, he reportedly rejected the allegations, asserting that due procedure was followed and that the claims were being examined objectively.
