Bhubanswar:  The state Revenue Minister Surya Narayan Patro inaugurated the 15th National Provisional Population Totals for Census 2011 on Thursday.

According to the provisional reports, the state’s total population is four crore, 19 lakh, 47, thousand and 358. In a decade there has been a reported growth of 51 lakhs and 42 thousand 698 of population in the state.

But there is a marked decline in the birth rate of girl child.  Among the babies below six, there is again a sharp decline of girls compared to the boy child. 

According to the 2001 census, while the boys born were 1000, the number of girls born were 953, the number of girls born were only 934 in the year 2011.

The districts, where there is a reduced birth rate for the boy child are Ganjam, Angul, Nayagarh, and Dhenkanal. 

“The state health department needs to be aware of this,” said the Minster.
