Bhubaneswar: The major coal producing company, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), and leading miner Indrani Patnaik of Keonjhar have emerged as the top income tax payers in the State in corporate and individual categories respectively.
 
A sum of Rs 8643.7 crore was collected from the State as income tax this year which is 18 per cent more than the previous year. Around Rs 6,000 cr was collected from the corporate sectors among which the mines sector figured in the top, official sources said.
 
The MCL, which paid Rs 1,900 cr as income tax in advance, emerged as the highest tax payers in corporate category while Indrani Patnaik, the mines owner in Keonjhar, paid Rs 185 cr to the income tax department in advance. It has earned her the distinction of the highest tax payer in individual category.
