Cuttack: More than 400 ducks were culled and nearly 6000 duck eggs were destroyed at the Duck Fertilisation Center at Khapuria in Cuttack district after few ducks were tested positive for bird flu. Cuttack district administration has started mass culling of the birds including chickens within 1-2km radius of the center.

As per reports, after the death of few ducks, their blood samples were sent to Bhopal for test. After the reports confirmed bird flu, district administration began culling of the birds.

"When there were reports of bird flu, we culled all the birds and destroyed eggs on Friday night. Later, on Saturday, Cuttack CDMO called for a meeting and ordered the mass culling of birds within 2 Km radius of the centre," said, Bibekanada Mishra, senior clerk at the Duck Fertilisation Centre.

A team of veterinary officers will examine birds in various parts of the district today. An advisory has been issued to prohibit consumption of chicken, eggs and ducks for the next 3 months.

Last year in December, avian influenza outbreak in Krushna Prasad block of Puri district spiralled out of control as mass culling of chicken at infected poultry farms continued for eight days.
