Despite repeated awareness campaigns, bans, and public warnings, the use of manja-coated kite strings continues to pose serious threats to public safety across Odisha. In two separate incidents reported from Balasore and Dhenkanal, two persons were seriously injured after coming in contact with the sharp kite thread on Wednesday.
Severe Neck Injury
In Balasore, a biker sustained a severe neck injury after manja thread struck him while he was riding across the Tamulia Bridge. The incident occurred when two people were travelling on a motorcycle, and the kite string suddenly wrapped around the rider’s neck, causing serious injuries. The injured man was immediately rushed to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Another Incident in Dhenkanal
In another incident, a youth was injured in Dhenkanal town after coming into contact with manja thread. The mishap took place near Meenabazar under the jurisdiction of Dhenkanal Town Police Station. The injured youth has been identified as Abhisek Sahu, a resident of Sainbiri village. He suffered deep cuts on his nose and finger and was admitted to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital for medical care.
Following the incidents, police seized the manja thread and have initiated further investigation. Authorities have once again appealed to the public to strictly avoid using manja-coated kite strings, emphasising that such practices endanger the lives of commuters, pedestrians, and birds.
