Bolangir: Allegations of rampant smuggling of minerals has surfaced in Bolangir after local villagers detained a truck transporting manganese-ore today. Acting on a tip-off, the local forest security committee detained the manganese-laden truck at Bhaludunguri hill under Sadar Police limits.

Sources said the local villagers intercepted the truck engaged in the illegal transportation of manganese and alerted the officials of the Forest department. The driver and helper of the truck are absconding.

“We had intercepted the truck last night and informed the Forest department officials about the illegal transportation of minerals,” said Byasadev Senapati, member of the local forest security committee.

The cost of the seized manganese-ore is said to be around Rs 5 lakh. Meanwhile, the forest department officials have sought details from the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) regarding the truck.

“After getting information, we rushed to the spot and detained the truck. We have asked the RTO to provide details about the owner of the vehicle and necessary action will be taken against those involved in the incident,” said Bolangir forester, B Sahoo.
