Man trampled to death by elephants in Odisha

Baripada: A 51-year-old man was trampled to death by a herd of four elephants on Thursday in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district.

Dugudu Murmu, a tribal farmer, was attacked by the tuskers when he was trying to drive the herd away from his paddy field at Bhurulubani village in Jhapokharia police station area, Tapan Das, the forest range officer, Bangriposhi, said.

The herd, comprising a calf and three adults, entered Mayurbhanj from neighbouring Jharkhand, he said.

"The victim's family will get Rs 4 lakh as compensation from the state government. Of that, the first installment of Rs 40,000 has been handed over to the family memebrs for perfoming Murmu's last rites," Das added.
