In a heartbreaking incident, an elderly man and his young grandson lost their lives following a snakebite while they were asleep at their home in Sabarapalli village, under Sheragada block of Ganjam district.
The deceased have been identified as Panchanan Nayak and his grandson Rohan Paika. According to the sources, the family, as usual, went to bed after their dinner on Thursday night. Meanwhile, a venomous snake entered the house and bit both of them as they were sleeping.
Luckily, other family members were spared by the snake. On being bitten by the reptile, both the man and the grandson cried in pain. On hearing their screams for help, family members woke up and both the victims were rushed to the Sheragada Community Health Centre (CHC).

Despite proper preliminary treatment, their condition worsened, following which doctors referred them to MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MKCG) in Berhampur. Despite efforts by the medical team, both succumbed to the poison during treatment.
The sudden deaths have cast a pall of gloom over the village, with residents mourning the tragic loss of two lives from the same family. Locals have demanded immediate action from the administration to raise awareness about snakebite prevention and to ensure better emergency response in rural areas.
Snakebite-related fatalities remain a serious public health concern in several parts of rural Odisha, particularly during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons.
