A man impersonating a police constable was arrested by Berhampur Sadar Police on Monday after he was found checking vehicles and demanding money from motorists on Padaravalli Chhak along State Highway-17.
The accused, identified as Manoj Swain from Narayanpur village, attempted to escape upon seeing real police personnel but was apprehended shortly afterwards.
Extortion Under Guise of Vehicle Checking
According to reports, Manoj was wearing a police uniform and posing as a constable while conducting vehicle checks and collecting money from drivers. Local residents alerted the police regarding the suspicious activity. Acting on the information, a team from Berhampur Sadar Police Station rushed to the spot and intercepted Manoj.
During the search, police seized a toy gun, a police uniform, and other materials from his possession. The items were allegedly being used by the accused to create the impression of being an on-duty police constable.
Reports further indicated that Manoj had rented a house in Lathi by identifying himself as a police constable, misleading the landlord and those in the locality. Police sources confirmed that he had been staying there while carrying out the illegal activities on the highway.
Police Action and Investigation
Berhampur Sadar Police arrested Manoj and produced him before the court.
