Paradip: A man, who participated in a marathon run organised by Paradip Port Trust (PPT) here, died after he tripped and collapsed during the race, police said. Pravakar Behera (23) was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Behera, who hails from Khasapadia in Kendrapara district, was among 300 participants, including sportpersons, students, central and state government employees, who took part in the sprint. In view of the tragedy, the PPT authorities have suspended the event, including distribution of prizes for the day and postponed it to January 13.
Chairman of PPT J Jagannath Rao handed over a cheque of Rs 1.5 lakh to the bereaved family as ex-gratia, they said, adding police had sent the body for post-mortem. Inquiry into the incident is in progress.
