Rajnagar (Kendrapara): In a gruesome act, a man allegedly killed his wife and two babies by drowning them in a pond at Dhobeigada village under Rajnagar police station in Kendrapara district on Sunday night. Family of the deceased woman alleged that he committed the crime for more dowry while police are yet to make any comment on the incident.
According to neighbors, accused Nirmal Rout, who had been torturing his wife for more dowry, had a quarrel with her last night over saving money in the name of their two children. Nirmal demanded the amount from his in-law's house while his wife opposed it expressing inability of her paternal family. The accused had also been inflicting mental and physical torture on the woman since she gave birth to girl child, locals alleged.
The dispute between the two turned brutal on Sunday night following which Nirmal went berserk and drowned his wife and two babies in a nearby water body with the help of his brother Ratnakar Rout. Later, they fished out the body of the woman and hanged her in the room.
Locals traced the bodies of two babies floating in the pond in the following morning and informed police. Later, the body of the woman was found hanging inside the room in a wet condition.
Being irked over such bizarre incident, villagers beat up the accused duo black and blue before handing over them to police. Both have been arrested and investigation is on to unearth more information about the ghastly crime, police said.
