Kendrapara: The Police today arrested a 40-year-old man on the charge of burning alive his newly married wife at Nahanga village under Derabish police station jurisdiction.

The accused Gopinath Panda had allegedly burnt Sonali Priyadarshini Panda (28) alive after pouring kerosene on her.

The victim Sonali, who had sustained 75 per cent burn injury, died in the SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack on Saturday last, the police said.

Sonali was married to Gopinath a year back and was allegedly tortured by her husband and her in-laws on dowry-related grounds.

The Police had swung to action after the victim's mother Bina Panda lodged a complaint in this regard with the police.

A search was on to arrest the victim's father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law who were named as co-accused in the FIR, the police said.

Goipnath was booked under section 302 (murder), 498-A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 4 Dowry Prevention Act, and was later remanded to judicial custody, the police said.
