Baripada: A man was arrested after villagers handed him over to the police on charge of motivating them to undergo religious conversion in Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday, police said.

One Ghasiram Bindhani, who claimed to be a Baptist believer of Karmasola village under Badasahi area was arrested under section 4 of Orissa Freedom of Religion Act (OFRA), Inspector-In-Charge of Betanoti police station Parasuram Sahu said.

Bindhani was visiting Badajor village under Betanoti police station for last few days and allegedly motivating the villagers to undergo religious conversion and embrace Christianity, he said.

The villagers led by one Sukanta Nayk protested his action, detained him and handed over to the police, he said.

"A case has been registered against Bindhani on the basis of an FIR lodged by Nayak at Badasahi police station and the accused will be produced before the court tomorrow", the IIC said.

Meanwhile, secretary of Mayurbhanj district unit of VHP Khageswar Singha condemned alleged bid to convert people through various inducement and demanded stringent action against Bindhani.
