Jharsuguda:  Jharsuguda district administration today filed a complaint against Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd accusing it of violating environment laws, a day after Union Coal Minister Sripakash Jaiswal lauded the performance of the central PSU.

The Collector of Jharsuguda district, Bishnu Prasad Sahu has filed four complaint cases under section 19 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 before the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court, Jarsuguda.

The charges have been made against the Chief General Manager and project officers of Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL) for violation of environment laws.

The district administration alleged that the MCL authorities are operating coal mines by expanding their area of operation and production in different mines under Lakhanpur and Jharsuguda tahsil under Jharsuguda district.

It also alleged that the MCL authority undertook coal mining operation without obtaining required environmental clearance from Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF).

"The MCL is undertaking coal production activities illegally from 1992 to 2012," said Sandip Agasti, public prosecutor.
