Bhubaneswar: The 14-year-old braveheart from Mahakalapada who was set on fire by two miscreants succumbed to her injuries and died at the Capital Hospital late on Thursday night. She was allegedly raped before she was set afire. At around midnight, Inspector-in-Charge of Capital Police Station Asim Panda announced the death of the rape victim. She was courageous in her fight against heavy odds, but her condition deteriorated as she was being taken to Delhi for further medical treatment. Doctors at the SCB Medical College and Hospital had brought her to Bhubaneswar airport, but the plan to shift her to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi was jettisoned as the victim’s condition turned critical.
 
The Dalit girl from Mahakalapada block of Kendrapara district was set ablaze by a youth and his friend on July 28. Both the prime suspects in this case –Pradip Das and Ekadashi Das-have been arrested.
 
Soon after her death, angry protesters damaged and torched vehicles in different parts of Bhubaneswar early this morning. Protesters also tried to forcibly enter the residences of health minister Damodar Rout and chief minister Naveen Patnaik. PCC president Jayadev Jena visited Capital Hospital last night and blamed government apathy for the deterioration of the braveheart’s condition. Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda also met family members of the girl at the Capital Hospital.
 
The Kendrapara MP promised stern action against the two culprits who have already been arrested by the police. Soon after the postmortem, the body of the deceased was sent to Puri where her funeral was conducted amid tight security.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has condoled the death of the braveheart and announced an assistance of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased’s family.
