Luxury tourist train to ply in Odisha soon

Bhubaneswar: Odisha will soon have a luxury train to cater to foreign and high-end tourists. A discussion regarding this was held on Thursday between the Railways and State government officials at the State Secretariat here.

The meeting chaired by Chief Secretary AP Padhi and attended by Additional Member of Railways (tourism and catering) Sanjiv Garg discussed financial and managerial sides of the plan, informed official sources.

“The Railways held talks with the State government to introduce luxury trains on lines with the ‘Palace on wheels’. Some states in the country have already started operating these luxury trains,” said Padhi adding that the train will particularly cater to foreign and high end tourists.”

The project is likely to be a joint collaboration between the Indian Railways and the Odisha Tourism and Development Corporation (OTDC), sources added.

Currently luxury trains are operating on various tourist circuits in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

Earlier, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had written to the State tourism department for water Aerodrome operations in the State and requested to identify a site in Chilika for the purpose.

State SpiceJet Limited has already evinced interest in introducing the ‘Sea Plane’ air connectivity on at least three routes in Odisha.
